I was so excited when I heard
that I was going to go to Vanuatu for my Peace Corps service.

Thoughts of beautiful beaches, bikinis, margaritas, and warm sunshine were
going through my head. I could feel the sand between my toes and the wind
whipping through my sarong. Instead, I get to Vanuatu and was aghast at the
thought of having to wear....an Island Dress. My first
reaction? The Island Dress, or Mother Hubbard, is not exactly my idea
of flattering. It hid everything, was too colorful, and just plain
BIG. Some of the female volunteers had said that it's our history
coming back to bite us in the ass. It was the white man who introduced
the Mother Hubbard, now we are punished to wear them! Several months
into service, the Island dress isn't as bad as it first was. |

On tough days, the bright calico is great to
cheer up even the cloudiest of skies.
On warm, windy days, its great to pick up a good breeze. The
best part about the island dress is that it's unrestricting and
comfortable, although there's more than enough calico to share.
Girls can have fun in the island dress! |
